Understanding Impact Damage
The brain is a jello-like substance, enclosed in a hard bony structure, the skull. While the skull protects the brain from being crushed by some forces, it contributes to injury from other forces.
This can occur when the brain is propelled into the skull, as a result of either the head hitting an object, the head being struck or the head rapidly accelerating or decelerating.
Impact damage can occur from the contact of the soft brain with the sharp interior of the skull, at both the site of the initial contact and at the diametrically opposite site in the brain, as a result of a rebound effect when the head is set in motion. Thus, the terms coup, contracoup.
Understanding Subtle Brain Injury
The concussions that disable, are almost always more symptomatic at 24 hours, than at the 2-4 hour time frame when injured persons are evaluated in the emergency room. Brain injury symptoms escalate over the first 24 hours, because brain injury involves a cascade of events. It is critical that if you are still symptomatic the day after your injury, go back to the same Emergency Room, don’t wait for a doctors appointment. It is critical that the Emergency Room personnel see that the symptoms still persist or have gotten worse.
